Women In Film

Women In Film advocates for and advances the careers of women working in the screen industries—to achieve parity and transform culture. Founded in 1973, Women In Film supports all women working in film, television, and digital media from emerging to advanced careers. Their distinguished programs include mentoring, speaker and screening series, a production training program, writing labs, film finishing funds, legal aid, and an annual financing intensive. Women In Film advocates for gender parity through research, education, and media campaigns. Women In Film honors the achievements of women in Hollywood through the Legacy Series, annual Emmy and Oscar parties, and their signature event, the Women In Film Annual Gala. Membership is open to all media professionals, and more information can be found on their website.

FILM FINISHING FUND
Through this fund, a select group of films—from any genre or format—is awarded grants in cash and in-kind gifts, enabling them to complete production; many going on to gain distribution, receive top honors at film festivals, and win accolades including Oscars and Peabody awards. Thanks to Stella Artois for their support of this program.

FEMALE FILMMAKERS INITIATIVE
In 2012, the Sundance Institute and Women In Film, Los Angeles launched the Female Filmmakers Initiative to foster gender parity for women behind the camera. Their first step was to understand the hard numbers and the root causes behind the paucity of American female filmmakers so we could address the problem head-on. Their landmark research revealed key barriers and opportunities for women filmmakers that inform our collective and individual work.

ANNUAL GALA
This yearly benefit, formerly known as the Crystal + Lucy Awards®, supports Women In Film, Los Angeles’ educational and philanthropic programs, and our advocacy for gender parity throughout the industry. Since 1977, WIF has annually honored outstanding women in the entertainment industry who have broken ground and excelled in their chosen fields. These awards have evolved to honor women whose entrepreneurial strides are creating opportunities for more women to succeed in careers in the screen industries.

LEGACY SERIES
By filming interviews with trailblazing women whose accomplishments paved the way for new generations of women working in front of and behind the camera, WIF is building a library of knowledge and inspiration, preserved in a special collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Thanks to the Dr. Scholl Foundation for their support of this program.

PRODUCTION PROGRAM
This multifaceted program offers support and funding for short-form content, which includes mentoring for writers, directors, creative producers, and line producers, as well as resources to hire a women-focused crew. This program is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
