Time’s Up
TIME’S UP is an organization that insists on safe, fair and dignified work for women of all kinds. We want women from the factory floor to the floor of the Stock Exchange, from child care centers to C-suites, from farm fields to the tech field, to be united by a shared sense of safety, fairness, and dignity as they work and as we all shift the paradigm of workplace culture.
Powered by women, our TIME’S UP™ programming addresses the systemic inequality and injustice in the workplace that have kept underrepresented groups from reaching their full potential. We partner with leading advocates for equality and safety to improve laws and corporate policies; help change the face of corporate boardrooms and the C-suite; and enable more women and men to access our legal system to hold wrongdoers accountable. No more silence. No more waiting. No more tolerance for discrimination, harassment or abuse. TIME’S UP.
TIME’S UP was born out of the need to turn pain into action. In the fall of 2017—as revelations of widespread abuse and misbehavior at the hands of powerful men sparked a global reckoning—a group of women in entertainment began to meet. Artists, executives, producers and other leaders came together to talk about what we could do to prevent abuse and ensure equity for working women. We started exploring what we could do to immediately protect women in our industry.
As we grappled with the reality that 80 to 90 percent of leadership in our industry was male—and largely composed of white men—we realized systemic change was necessary. We broke into groups to work on addressing different issues, which led to working groups focusing on issues like safety, equity, and power. Female farmworkers from Alianza Nacional de Campesinas provided powerful inspiration with their open letter, which pushed us to think beyond Hollywood. As we addressed our own industry, we also knew that we had the opportunity—and responsibility—to create change for women everywhere.
As a first program to address safety in workplaces beyond the entertainment industry, we launched the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which is housed and administered by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). The Fund connects those who experience sexual misconduct including assault, harassment, abuse and related retaliation in the workplace or in trying to advance their careers with legal and public relations assistance. What started in entertainment has since grown to other industries and geographies, representing women of all kinds across race, religion, and economic backgrounds. Together, we are seizing this unprecedented moment and transforming it into meaningful and institutionalized change across culture, companies, and laws. And we’re just getting started.
