The National Black Women’s Justice Institute

The National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI) works to reduce racial and gender disparities across the justice continuum affecting Black women, girls, and their families, by conducting research, providing technical assistance, engaging in public education, promoting civic engagement, and advocating for informed and effective policies. NBWJI works independently and in collaboration with a number of universities and organizations to improve outcomes for women and girls impacted by criminalization and economic marginalization.

INTERRUPTING SCHOOL-TO-CONFINEMENT PATHWAYS FOR GIRLS
The educational experiences of girls impacted by incarceration are often complicated and involve multiple setbacks. Histories of academic underperformance, addiction, victimization and abuse, school discipline, school truancy, and absenteeism, among other issues, often compound to create learning conditions that are extremely challenging and undesirable. NBWJI’s research and technical assistance explore innovative approaches to address this complex issue.

INCREASING THE CAPACITY OF ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES
In partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women and the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, NBWJI works to increase the capacity of organizations that are working to reduce gender-based violence in African American communities. As a Technical Assistance provider to TA providers working with African American-serving organizations across the nation, NBWJI conducts culturally specific webinars, workshops, and develops tools to advance research-informed interventions to support reducing domestic/intimate partner violence and sexual assault in African American communities.

IMPROVING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR FORMERLY INCARCERATED WOMEN & GIRLS
NBWJI serves as the lead evaluation partner for The California Wellness Foundation Women’s Initiatives, an innovative investment in interventions and strategies designed to improve economic and wellness outcomes for women and girls impacted by incarceration and HIV.
